Closing the loop of learning with AI tutors

An experienced educator discusses how AI learning tutors can offer vital support to students, acting as 24/7 assistants and delivering a unique level of personalisation
More
DURING MY time teaching, I created hundreds of lesson plans and assessments. My class had 25 students, and one of the biggest challenges I constantly faced was meeting individual student needs. How could I create one lesson plan to meet the needs of 25 unique learners? How could I personalise learning to make it more effective for every student in my class? I’m sure most Aussie educators face the same challenge.
We can think of the personalisation of learning as a spectrum. On one end is a personalised learning pathway for every student, where each student in a cohort is learning content and skills relevant to them and in modalities that work for them. On the other end is common instruction given to the entire cohort of students.
This article was written by Misbah Jafary, co-founder and COO of Toddle. Launched in 2019, Toddle is used by 2,000-plus progressive schools across more than 100 countries and is widely regarded as the most modern LMS in the world.
“AI tutors do not replace a teacher’s expertise in assessing students. Instead, think of them as a powerful new tool that enables teachers to drive understanding in a highly personalised way”

Our current practices lie somewhere in between. Most of the educators I know of design lesson plans and add a challenging problem for quick learners, some extra resources for students who need additional support, and specific adjustments for students on the NCCD. Given the time and data constraints, this is perhaps the most that can be humanly achieved.
At Toddle, we believe that this is about to change with the development of AI tutors. AI tutors can help make teaching and learning more personalised and engaging without putting additional pressure on our already overworked educators. Personally, I am very excited about their use in classes.
You can think of AI tutors as intelligent teaching assistants that take students on immersive learning journeys that adapt in real time to each student’s unique learning needs. Simply put, an AI tutor functions as follows:
Teachers can create AI tutors with specific purposes, such as testing for mastery (or building mastery), analysing a piece of writing, engaging in a debate with a student, assisting with research on a topic or simulating interactions with a literary or historical figure.
The creation process is straightforward. Teachers define the AI tutor’s role in a few sentences and with set guidelines – for example, instructing the AI not to give away answers but to provide gentle nudges instead. The AI handles the rest.
Teachers can preview these AI tutors and assign them to students. Depending on the AI tutor’s purpose, students interact with it to receive feedback on their work, hints on problems they’re stuck on and personalised support.
The AI tutors then evaluate students’ progress and provide teachers with a summary of where each student stands.
AI tutors do not replace a teacher’s expertise in assessing students. Instead, think of them as a powerful new tool that enables teachers to drive understanding in a highly personalised way while making learning more engaging. They offer individualised support, giving targeted feedback to every student while they are working on assessments.
research the socio-economic conditions in pre-independence India or just testing their mastery of a specific topic. AI tutors can provide great real-time feedback and nudges to students. They can also act as brainstorming partners.
At Toddle, we have built this entire cycle that is embedded within the platform, and we’re genuinely excited about what this means for educators. By harnessing AI, we’re not just enhancing lesson planning and student engagement – we’re transforming the entire learning experience to be more tailored, effective and engaging for every student. The future of education is exciting, and we’re thrilled to be part of this journey towards truly personalised learning.

However, can an AI tutor help a student learn a topic such as, say, types of triangles in a highly personalised way? Certainly! That’s what AI tutors are great at. Teachers can pick a topic, and an AI tutor can help students learn it at their pace, tackling their misconceptions, helping them practise questions at the right difficulty level, nudging them in the right direction, finding resources personalised for them, checking for their mastery, articulating feedback for them and summarising their performance for the teachers.
For each lesson, AI can give real-time support to students. Toddle’s AI Tutor is designed to act as a 24/7 guide for students. Suppose you have created a learning experience where students are advising Mark Antony on his speech in Julius Caesar or interacting with Mahatma Gandhi to

Returning to our spectrum of personalisation – can AI tutors help chart out a fully personalised learning journey for every student? Maybe in the distant future. The models right now are not nearly sophisticated enough to achieve this. Learning is such a complex phenomenon, with deep social-emotional connections, that it will be a while (if ever at all) before AI can make learning completely personalised for every student.
