Joel Hogarth is the head of philosophy (P-12) at Westbourne Grammar School, where he’s passionate about creating an educational experience that empowers students. His journey began as a primary school teacher at Williamstown Primary School, where he was driven by a vision to foster collaboration and innovation in the classroom.
Returning to his alma mater, Westbourne Grammar School, Hogarth initially took on the role of pastoral care leader. With his calm and approachable nature, along with exceptional communication skills, he built strong, lasting relationships within the school community.
Now, as head of philosophy, Hogarth is leading the development of a whole-school philosophy program that reflects his commitment to shaping students who are both intellectually capable and ethically grounded. Through innovative curriculum design, community input and data-driven evaluation, he’s working to instill 21st-century skills in students. At the core of this program are ethical and critical reasoning, providing students with the tools and confidence to navigate complex issues with insight and purpose.
Hogarth’s vision of empowerment extends to his educational team. He places a strong emphasis on professional development and collaboration, creating an environment where educators are encouraged to think critically, innovate and work together toward a shared goal.
Above all, Hogarth believes that meaningful education is about more than just academic achievement. It’s about nurturing both intellect and character, preparing students to become thoughtful, confident thinkers who can approach global challenges with integrity and clarity.
