Christina Cammarano is a student wellbeing program coordinator at Marcellin College, a Catholic secondary school in Melbourne for boys.
Carving out a career in education is the culmination of a lifelong dream for Cammarano, who declared in Grade 1 that she wanted to be a teacher.
However, at Marcellin College, she saw even greater possibilities in addition to teaching Italian and religious education.
“Teaching is all I’ve ever wanted to do, and I can’t say that I considered undertaking positions of leadership until I started working at Marcellin College,” says Cammarano. “With the guidance and support of executive leadership, I’ve been given the confidence to give things a go and have really thrived.”
Recognised as a Rising Star 2025 by The Educator, Cammarano is proud of her achievement in building the pastoral program over the last 12 months. This has been done in collaboration with the pastoral care, marketing, administration and maintenance teams.
Reaching goals has spurred Cammarano on to achieve more.
She says, “There’s still a lot of room to grow, but I certainly am an energetic and enthusiastic personality with a can-do attitude.
“I enjoy being a part of the team and seeing the progress we make in our programs, events and endeavours. It reaffirms that the work we are doing is improving college life and the school experience for our students, and I feel proud to be able to contribute to that.”
Cammarano works best under pressure and relishes the challenge of putting her mind to a task.
“Working in a school where I am able to utilise these skills and draw on these qualities means that I love what I do, and I come to work excited to tackle the day’s challenges,” she says,
Aware that she is still in the early stages of her career as an educator, Cammarano is dedicated to collaborating, discovering and exploring. She takes time out to work with the school’s professional learning leaders to seek ways to augment her skill set.
For example, Cammarano has stepped outside her comfort zone by becoming involved in all aspects of language teaching, both at the college in developing mock examination material for students and as a Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) assessor.
She says, “Time is always made to reflect on what has been done and to consider how this could be improved from one year to the next. It’s always validating to receive feedback on the refinements made when staff notice how you have elevated an event or a program since the year prior.”
Now an award winner and having grown her career, Cammarano is thankful for the opportunities that have come her way.
“It all confirms that I have made the right decision in becoming a teacher and pursuing my dreams at Marcellin College, and I’m even more motivated than ever to live up to the college motto and to ‘strive for the highest’ myself, particularly in the area of leadership.”
