“No matter how many clients I have, I make sure to call each one personally every quarter. It’s a chance to not only update them on their portfolio, but also check on how they’re doing personally”

Kate Tomerini commenced her teaching career at St Patrick’s College Townsville in January 2021 after completing a bachelor’s degree in education at James Cook University in 2020. In her second year of teaching, she has continued to display a passion for her chosen vocation, with a high level of involvement in all facets of the college.
In 2022, Tomerini commenced teaching Aquatic Practices, the first applied subject offered in the science faculty, providing students that undertake a vocational pathway with the opportunity to continue to study a science subject in Years 11 and 12. Prior to the implementation of the subject, in her first year of teaching, she wrote the study plan for the subject, not only planning the content but also developing assessment items and speaking with a range of external stakeholders to design a range of practical experiences for students as she led and implemented the program. Tomerini’s Aquatic Practices program heavily integrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives and activities, therefore increasing engagement and academic achievement among Indigenous students. The program also allows students to interact with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people within the community.
Even in the early years of her career, Tomerini displays commitment, leadership and innovation to allow young people many experiences outside the classroom. Her welcoming personality and commitment to forming strong partnerships with community members have allowed the college to be well positioned for the future growth of her subject areas.
