“No matter how many clients I have, I make sure to call each one personally every quarter. It’s a chance to not only update them on their portfolio, but also check on how they’re doing personally”

Angeline Yannopoulos is the curriculum leader: technology at Genazzano FCJ College and has over a decade of experience in the industry. She is an educator for the Third Millennium, bringing together collaborative, creative and critical thinking.
“To say teachers are busy is an understatement, so certainly one strength I can offer is my ability to take an idea and turn it into a unit of work that allows others to benefit from digital technologies without disrupting their own curriculum,” she says. “The innate benefit is that students can see and learn about technologies within the context of other areas.”
Part of her motivation is the underrepresentation of digital technologies in many girls’ schools.
“In high school and university, I lived through those same obstacles and very nearly quit technology all together. Ending up in teaching, I realised creating these opportunities was exactly what I wanted to be doing,” Yannopoulos says.
Since joining Genazzano FCJ College, she has grown a small faculty of one with three elective classes into a fully established 7–12 pathway for digital technologies and a faculty that now permeates the school with six staff.
Some of the successful projects Yannopoulos has led are the following:
· working with the Languages Department to have a NAO robot speak custom language scripts with students in Italian and Chinese
· collaborating with the Performing Arts Department to have students in Year 9 create a remotely operated, programmed scoreboard for the 7/8 High School Musical production
· developing and integrating Design Thinking activities into the year-level BE Program (Social and Personal Development Program) and Year 9 Immersion Experience, focusing on design thinking
and sustainability
· training staff in using games in the classroom and creating the Minecraft Gamification Immersion Day, linking with Maths, History, Performing Arts, English, Visual Communications and Science
· supporting the integration of Python programming in the Maths curriculum in Years 7 and 8
She also runs the co-curricular GenTech program, which focuses on building students’ skills in problem-solving, communication, and creative thinking through the international RoboCup competition. With her mentorship, the first group of Genazzano FCJ College competitors received the runner-up prize at the 2022 Victorian State Competition. GenTech has also expanded this year to take part in the international eSports competition – the FUSE Cup.
And Yannopoulos reflects on these achievements with pride.
“This is truly significant in a girls’ school battling against the previously mentioned barriers,” she says. “Girls at Genazzano can now be highly accomplished programmers, project managers, and experienced designers through our college's rich and embedded technology curriculum.”
Despite achieving so much and leading a growing movement, Yannopoulos is motivated to do more. She wants to encourage students to have a diverse range of interests and not be inhibited by stereotypes.
“I don’t just have an interest in one thing – it’s not just a technology interest or just a science interest, or just an art interest. I enjoy the flexibility and opportunity of linking all those interests together,” she says. “There are a lot of other young girls who are innately creative, but that does not preclude them from being interested in STEM fields. It’s really important to challenge those assumptions and create opportunities for anyone to explore engineering and technology.”
