With almost 40 years of experience as an educator, Mauger began as a classroom teacher before rising to the role of principal in 2009. In addition, she is an accredited Australian Council of Educational Research NT lead reviewer, which involves reviewing schools’ performance against a national teaching and learning framework.
Mauger cites the biggest challenge of her daily responsibilities as the diverse range of tasks that principals have to address.
“How I deal with this is by investing in and building the capacity of those in the leadership team who can provide support, but more importantly, by committing to the school improvement agenda and staying the course,” she says. “It’s also about not taking on anything that does not align with the strategic plan to ensure the focus is on improving student outcomes. Maintaining the right balance is important.”
Mauger’s career highpoint came in 2021 when she was named Principal of the Year – Darwin Region in the NT Teaching in the Territory Excellence Awards.
Explaining her career mindset, Mauger says, “My approach is to always do your best, stay true to yourself and maintain high standards – near enough is never good enough. My attitude is to inspire others by having a clear vision.”
After enjoying her own school days, Mauger was inspired to become an educator and also followed in the footsteps of her teacher father. She has been successful and has built a reputation for adapting to changing generations and moving with society.
“I enjoy trying new ideas and ‘thinking outside of the box’ to give students greater learning opportunities. Twenty-first century learning and innovation is important to me as I am not afraid to be a changemaker and challenge the status quo to make teaching and learning more exciting and interesting,” says Mauger. “Schools are preparing our future workforce, and it is essential that we teach students the skills they will need for the future: communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking.”
Mauger is also an invited speaker at international events and conferences, with previous appearances at 2022 World Education Week, the 2022 Outstanding Schools Asia conference and the 2023 EduTech Asia conference.
