Emmie Cossell serves as the Year 9 project leader and a secondary science teacher at Matthew Flinders Anglican College on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland. In her role, she spearheads the acclaimed Year to RISE program – a transformative curriculum for Year 9 students that was honoured as an Excellence Awardee for “Innovation in Curriculum Design” at the 2024 Australian Education Awards.
Since beginning her teaching career in 2011, Cossell has earned a reputation as an innovative educator who seamlessly weaves together wellbeing frameworks, design-thinking pedagogy and character-based learning. Her approach is designed to spark motivation, deepen engagement and bring genuine joy to the learning journey. Under her leadership, both staff and students are inspired to embrace curiosity, collaborate meaningfully and pursue learning with a sense of purpose.
Cossell’s commitment to expanding opportunities for young people is evident in her involvement with initiatives like the Flinders Inspiring Women in Science and Health (I-WiSH) Conference, which has opened doors for girls in STEM and health-related fields across three Australian states. Through the Flinders Discovery Institute, she also collaborates with the Australian Catholic University’s Institute for Positive Psychology and Education, working to evaluate and enhance student motivation and engagement.
Guided by optimism and authenticity, Cossell believes that schools should be vibrant communities of connection, creativity and contribution. She is dedicated to empowering young people to think critically, act with compassion and become architects of a brighter future – for themselves and for the world around them.
