“I will continue to empower and encourage my staff to perform at their best as I have done for the last decade. I will continue to advocate for my clients, embracing new technology and being open to business and industry changes”
Ken Dixon,
Dixon Insurance Services
Shane Wilson is the principal at Marble Bar Primary School, assuming the role in 2017. His career has gravitated towards rural and remote communities, beginning in 1996 at the remote Yandeyarra Remote Community School in the Pilbara.
Wilson’s proudest achievements come from breaking down boundaries and delivering critical change to First Nations students with culturally responsive STEM education.
He says, “I strive for my school to be a synergy of Aboriginal and industry leaders, staff and students excelling together, showcasing culturally responsive and innovative pedagogy. This has led to four first-of-its-kind virtual worlds: an art gallery, a virtual teacher development centre, an Aboriginal languages centre, and an astronomy world.”
Progress has been achieved via Wilson’s overhaul of Marble Bar’s whole school pedagogy, guided by the following principles:

Another key deliverable that Wilson has overseen is engagement.
He says, “The attendance of students, and particularly in remote schools, is a priority currently for our system and our school.”
Wilson’s efforts have been lauded domestically and internationally.
“As a Schools Plus Fellow, I have travelled to Finland to be immersed in and present at the Eye on TAMK Conference (24 participating nations), toured Singapore’s education system with the 11 other Teaching Fellows and showcased Marble Bar’s Virtual World at the Asia Pacific ICT Alliance Awards in Islamabad, Pakistan,” he says.
In addition, another of Wilson’s initiatives at Marble Bar has been acknowledged, including creating a first-of-its-kind VR world and teacher development centre and promoting educational equality for minority groups. This innovation has engaged students and sparked their passion for computer science, showcasing the Nyamal culture and shining a light on the East Pilbara’s rich Indigenous cultures locally and globally.
Wilson is a strong advocate for students gaining experience beyond the classroom, which encompasses:
“I am proud to lead by example in some of the world’s most isolated communities. This includes Australia’s central NT, SA and WA tri-states to the border and Pilbara. These leadership opportunities have been an incredible highlight of my teaching career. I collaborate with Aboriginal Elders in transforming culturally responsive teaching and learning approaches,” Wilson says. “I am immensely proud of my students’ global outreach to industry leaders, educators and students from around the world, extending to, for example, the USA, China, Spain and Japan.”
