“When I think about the thing that gives me the most joy and energy, it is about supporting other staff on their leadership journey and assisting and empowering them to be the best they can be”
Adrian Camm,
Westbourne Grammar School
Adrian Camm is principal and executive director at Westbourne Grammar School.
His path to becoming one of Australia’s outstanding educators began unusually with the Air Force. An undiagnosed eye condition forced Camm to give up on that career before it began, but it opened the door to education.
He hit the ground running by joining a regional government school teaching physics before he had finished his Graduate Diploma of Education.
Since then, Camm has completed a PhD and carved out a sparkling resume with a range of accolades, including:

However, Camm takes more pride in the galvanising effect he can offer as a principal.
He says, “When I think about the thing that gives me the most joy and energy, it is about supporting other staff on their leadership journey and assisting and empowering them to be the best they can be. Lifting others up and shining the spotlight on them is one of the best things about my work.”
Proving this is Camm’s creation of the Learning to Lead: The Westbourne Leadership Development program. The six-month course has graduated 85 staff, with 42 engaged in the program’s second iteration.
Camm’s central message to staff who enrol is:
“This program will develop you in many ways. It will set you up for the next step in your career, whatever that may be for you. I hope that there will be this opportunity for you at Westbourne; however, should the next step in your career be at another school, I hope you take this experience with you and go and achieve great things. And I, for one, will be your biggest cheerleader.”
This attitude encapsulates Camm’s philosophical approach and system-wide contribution to Australia’s education sector, which involves sharing the work at Westbourne widely.
“We are attempting to change the narrative of a profession in crises by creating our own narrative, democratising teaching and learning practices as a result, and publicly lifting each other up and acknowledging the great work being done in our school in a variety of media and social spaces, in order to build a positive culture and to reposition teaching as a great profession,” he says.
The key to Camm’s success and respect from other educators is his dedication. He has crafted his career by surrounding himself with challenge, the pursuit of knowledge and experience, and continuously striving to better himself.
“I do everything in my power to become an expert at whatever it is I am pursuing,” he says. “I see this as a positive, but someone on the outside looking in might see it as obsessive. I embrace opportunity and do everything I can to excite and engage the young people under my care.”
