As a senior leader, Chris Nastrom-Smith has led cultural transformation linked to the strategic pursuit of continuous staff development and outstanding student outcomes in a range of high-performing independent Queensland schools. This change leadership process has been achieved through a commitment to building expert teams and the use of a coaching methodology to promote self-reflection and agency among staff and students. Chris is recognised as a strategic, innovative and solutions-focused leader with a genuine concern for the personal and professional growth of each member of the school community.
In his current role as Deputy Principal – Curriculum at Loreto College Coorparoo, Chris has been the driving force behind the pursuit of a school climate that strives for academic excellence and promotes a range of diverse pathways that recognise the strengths and aspirations of each individual student. He has worked tirelessly to expand the whole school’s understanding of data and how it can be leveraged to enhance teaching practice, inform growth opportunities and improve student outcomes.
To support the achievement of students, over the past three years, Chris has collaborated with Loreto’s leadership team to implement a strategic innovation that ensures professional learning is relevant to career stage and facilitates a cycle of continuous improvement through the college’s bespoke teaching and learning framework, HEART. This professional learning approach has required sophisticated and sensitive change management to honour the college’s mission and to enhance a culture of high expectations, rigorous thinking and reflective practice so that teaching staff are motivated and connected in their pursuit of excellence.
Whole school projects that Chris has led and that have strengthened Loreto’s standing as a leader in the education and empowerment of young women include the implementation of CANVAS as the college’s learning management system, the creation of a September study camp, the timetabling of specialist teacher tutorial lessons and the introduction of triannual academic progress conversations with every senior student, where data informs progress and assists students in staying motivated and aligned with future career aspirations. Through these conversations, Chris gets to know every Loreto student and collaborates with families to create an accessible pathway for every student.
Chris is committed to recognising the inherent potential in every individual and working towards ensuring they have the skills, capacities and dispositions to prosper and flourish within the broader community.
