Sunshine Coast Grammar School is an independent, co-educational, Christian-based school for children from Prep to Year 12 and one of four schools owned by the Presbyterian and Methodist Schools Association (PMSA).
Sustainability is at its core from the tree-lined campus, which is spread across natural spring-fed lakes and a 100-acre rainforest playground. The setting is designed to inspire a feeling of belonging in the school’s learning community, where staff and students are connected to a central purpose.
The focus of the sustainability program is centred around the umbrella of People, Planet and Progress, which seeks to create outward-thinking young people ready to tackle the challenges of a changing planet. Through a robust curriculum and co-curricular program, students engage with a variety of hands-on experiences that shape their perspective and build their capacity to be changemakers.
The strategy is based on engaging and aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), and Sunshine Coast has strengthened its resolve to be proactive in supporting service and sustainability initiatives in 2024.
Among the 17 SDG includes:
“We continue to see cyber as a key opportunity and will be further developing customer-centric solutions across various geographies and segments in line with our growth aspirations”

“Adopting the UN SDG as a roadmap for change, Grammar embarked on an ambitious journey to create change locally. Through developing partnerships with local businesses, council and community agencies, we continue to grow as a hub of sustainable practice,” says Anna Owen.
A key to the success of the program is how it responds to the changing needs of the school and local community.
“Through regular engagement with local charity, business and environmental partners, we have evolved over time,” says Anna Owen. “The addition of a curriculum focus on SDG and a range of extension activities, including ambassadorships and passion projects has been well received by the school community.”
Sunshine Coast mentors all of its students via Primary and Secondary Service teams and also Green teams, which enables all of its pupils to engage with an ecosystem of talent and learning.
Anna Owen says, “Students not only have a wide array of service and sustainability projects on offer during the school year but can also elect to take on a passion project of their own, aligning their own passion with the UN SDG and working towards creating tangible change for people and planet.”
Taking its efforts far beyond the campus, Sunshine Coast has been working closely with a range of community and school groups in Timor Leste since 2015.
These efforts are ongoing with plans to drive further development of SDG in an educational setting in Timor, and further support for local rural communities is planned, particularly with a focus on health and education of girls.
“In supporting these initiatives, alongside the future development of the Grammar Global Giving initiative – a program designed to repurpose school and sporting equipment for communities in the Pacific region – we envisage strong support and beneficial outcomes for our sustainability programs,” says Anna Owen.
