“In developing our framework, we acknowledged that for 90% of our community, the ambition was to be ‘Best in Class, Leading Practice or Among Leaders’ in sustainability for educational institutions,” says principal Anna Dickinson. “While remaining humble in our own Loreto Kirribilli way, we are proud to be aspiring to achieving carbon neutrality, in relation to all the emissions we can directly control, by 2030.”
Loreto Kirribilli, based in a suburb of Sydney with a student population of 1,100, has appointed a sustainability champion, Robert Magner, who leads the program on campus.
Magner says, “Having the framework in place has helped us to overcome many challenges. Our plans and aspirations are underpinned by our Loreto charism and follow on from the words and actions of Pope Francis, who says in his encyclical, ‘Many things have to change course, but it is we human beings above all who need to change.’”
Loreto Kirribilli’s initiatives include an audit of their roofs, proving that almost all can carry the weight of solar panels. Some have already been installed, and when all are in place, they will:
Other sustainable initiatives include:
cut emissions by 70%
save an estimated $170,000 annually in power costs
installing rainwater tanks in the junior school
converting to energy-efficient LED lighting throughout school buildings
upgrading hundreds of windows to improve fresh air and natural ventilation
placing ‘Return and Earn’ bins around the grounds
eliminating plastic packaging from the canteen
“In every corner of our campus, we are finding ways to reduce, regenerate, reuse and recycle,” Magner says.
There are also efforts by Year 12 students by way of an open letter to parents, encouraging them not to drive their children to school as Loretto Kirribilli is well-served by public transport links.
A ‘Green Fund’ has also been launched, whereby the school community can make tax-deductible donations to help finance the ongoing sustainability initiatives. This is evidenced by the campus’ newest building, Spiritus, with the sun-efficient design of its facade, future-proofed flexible design of its interiors, energy-efficient lighting, innovative mechanically assisted natural ventilation and air circulation, and rainwater collection and reuse.
“The Loreto Kirribilli Environmental Sustainability Framework specifically addresses the material topics of energy efficiency, carbon management, biodiversity, climate risk, transport, waste management, construction, refurbishment and education,” says Magner.
