In addition, Larrekeyah Primary, which first opened its doors in 1963, operates the impressive Bat Scram. The idea was formed after students built EV3 robotic scarecrows in digital technology classes to protect the school’s gardens from pests. Then the children brainstormed to find another real-life adaptation for their scarecrows.
Mattiazzo says, “The targeted end goal of Bat Scram is to successfully prevent bats from entering mango farms in a humane and safe manner. We are conscious of farmers putting preventatives in place to protect their produce, with some of these preventatives being harmful to wildlife.”
The students research discovered that bats only eat mangoes when their natural food source is destroyed.
“We tested the effectiveness of an energy- and environmentally friendly technology that we created in robotic form,” says Mattiazzo. “Upon completion of the test in the mango farm, our project was successful at removing bats safely, resulting in happy farmers.”
Bat Scram encapsulates the overriding ethos that Larrekeyah Primary seeks to instill.
Mattiazzo says, “The overriding sustainable improvement has been highlighting the importance of environmental protection to students. Developing students and giving them opportunities to make changes in our world through innovative designs gives us hope for our future.”
Trash to Treasure – Students are given the opportunity to work with recycled materials to make a range of different items. They hear from experts to gain a better understanding of the recycling process.
The Tourism – Workshops with industry professionals, as well as local excursions to visit tour operators, give students the opportunity to build their knowledge about different types of tourism as well as environmental sustainability and culturally responsible practices.
Water Waters – Students take part in research to help professional scientists and join the Australian Microplastic Assessment Project to tackle the global problem of microplastics in waterways and devise campaigns to raise awareness of what products contain them. Students design and create microplastic traps.
ECO Warriors – Students study composting and recycling of paper, bottles and cans.
Upcycle Market Stall – This allows students to reuse materials like fabric, soft plastic and plastic bottles to decrease waste.
