Phillip Heath has served as the ninth head of Barker College since 2014, guiding the school’s transformation to full coeducation by 2022. A passionate advocate for educational equity, he has established three primary campuses for Indigenous students: Darkinjung Barker (2016) and Ngarralingayil Barker (2020) in New South Wales and Dhupuma Barker (2021) in North East Arnhem Land. In recognition of his dedication to creating opportunities for Indigenous students, Heath was appointed a member of the Order of Australia in 2018 and named Australian School Principal of the Year at the 2023 Australian Education Awards.

Julia West leads the Marri Mittigar Campus in Sydney, bringing a rich background in teaching both modern and classical languages and prior experience as Head of Senior School at Meriden. In 2022, she launched a scholarship and tutoring program for refugee students at Barker College, a school renowned for its inclusive, two-way educational approach. In 2024, Principal Phillip Heath invited her to establish Marri Mittigar, a special assistance school for refugee children aged 5 to 15. West collaborates with refugee advocacy groups and government agencies to ensure Marri Mittigar provides a safe, supportive and culturally responsive environment.

Marri Mittigar is Barker College’s co-educational special assistance school, created to support children and young people of refugee experience. Its name, meaning “Many Friends” in Darug – the language of the First Nations people on whose land the school stands – captures the spirit of welcome and community that defines Marri Mittigar.
Opened in May 2024, the school was established in response to the need for educational environments where refugee students feel safe, seen and supported. Marri Mittigar builds on Barker’s after-school tutoring service for refugee-background children, which began in early 2023, and now offers a comprehensive, inclusive education. Here, academic achievement and personal growth are equally valued, with a trauma-informed curriculum integrated with therapeutic support. This approach helps students thrive while remaining connected to their cultural heritage and identity.
Students at Marri Mittigar also participate in a wide range of co-curricular activities, enriching their Australian schooling experience and fostering a sense of belonging. Teachers are culturally responsive, incorporating students’ native languages alongside English to enhance learning and break down language barriers. This inclusive, multilingual approach celebrates diversity and nurtures pride, empowering every student to succeed both in and out of the classroom.
