SEDA College WA’s mission is to change lives by walking side by side with community members, creating a healthy, happy environment. In the past year, the college launched three innovative programs linking education with industry.
The first focuses on inclusion, delivering sport clinics to people with disabilities. “Our college is committed to providing industry experiences for our students by creating classrooms that inspire learning,” says Silvio Lombardi, Vice Principal. “This opportunity to explore innovative ways for young people to lead and deliver Inclusion Units from their VET qualification with an applied learning approach, was a key part of elevating our program.”
This innovation was made possible with the supportive collaboration of SEDA College’s RTO, I-VET, helping to implement the units as a key part of its commitment to community engagement and hands-on learning. Silvio says, “The outcome of this program was to create an environment where our staff, students and our clients with disabilities have a happy, healthy sporting experience. The opportunity to provide a safe place for sport participation and engagement was paramount in the success of the program. It has also opened doors for students who hadn’t previously considered careers in this industry.”
The second initiative explored how SEDA’s Construction and Trade students could contribute to the community. In partnership with BGC, a leading Australian construction business, the college launched several impactful community projects. These included:

All of these projects are a collaborative in nature, allowing for the SEDA College WA students to engage in the planning process, and then applying their knowledge and skills to complete construction on site at various community venues. Additionally, the college is launching a recruitment campaign aimed at encouraging more females to join the construction and trade industry.. Assistant Principal Eleanor Collins says, “This has sparked conversations with industry leaders to break the gender stereotype associated with trades and make it more gender-inclusive. We are excited to continue empowering young women who want to work in this field.”
The third innovation involved the college’s Aboriginal Leadership Group, the Baldja Mob. Led by Aboriginal Engagement Coordinator, Shane Beros, the group hosted their first Yulunga Traditional Indigenous Games Day in July 2024. The event featured storytelling, language development, and activities using coloured strings to share 65,000 years of Aboriginal heritage. “This program will continue to create more opportunities for bridging the gap to reconciliation,” says Shane. “As a college, we believe we can make a difference in the lives of our students, our Aboriginal leaders and those they teach about culture on days like this.”
SEDA College WA continues to develop innovative programs through passionate staff and industry partnerships, offering students opportunities to grow into skilled young adults ready to positively impact their communities.
