To continue to push things forward, Larrakeyah has a series of focus groups, one of which is the Innovation Team. These teachers lead staff in professional learning and support colleagues with innovation using technology in the classroom.
In addition, the senior teacher head of curriculum and assessment also inspires others by working with teachers to implement whole school STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) days. She leads students to solve real-world problems using innovation in digital technology.
Larrakeyah also uses the app YouHue, which tracks student wellbeing daily. It enables teachers to use data to develop individual, cohort or year-level wellbeing programs.
“Innovation in the area of student wellbeing is not widely acknowledged,” says Mauger, explaining why the school has targeted this area. “The most important strategy is creating a culture that accepts change and the challenge of improving teaching and learning through innovation. We support teachers with professional learning to develop the skills to teach beyond the traditional curriculum.”
There is also a clear plan for continued innovation, with future initiatives planned with Larrakeyah’s international partner school in Singapore, where students from both schools can work collaboratively to develop solutions to real-world problems.
Mauger says, “Anyone who is communicating with ourselves will find us to be professional, experienced with the expertise to understand individual learning needs and committed to continuous school improvement with a strong focus on innovation in teaching and learning.”
