Westbourne Grammar School offers a compelling narrative – defined by innovation, inclusion and an unrelenting commitment to its people. Founded almost 160 years ago, this Victorian independent school is not resting on tradition. Instead, under the leadership of principal Dr. Adrian Camm and associate principal Teagan Collins, Westbourne is rewriting what it means to be an Employer of Choice in Australian education.
The culture is built around a simple but powerful premise: when people thrive, the entire school thrives. “This shared ownership fosters a sense of belonging and purpose, making Westbourne not just a workplace but a thriving community,” says Teagan Collins. That ethos is embedded in a distributed leadership model that empowers staff to contribute meaningfully to decision-making and innovation.
This people-first strategy is what elevates Westbourne above peers. Initiatives like reduced teaching loads, flexible working policies, loyalty and retention bonuses, and an extensive professional development offering have helped foster high staff satisfaction and a strong reputation.
“We don’t just recruit staff – we attract talent,” says Dr Camm. “Our recruitment strategy focuses on identifying individuals who are humble, hungry and smart. Despite the teacher shortage in Australia, we consistently draw a large pool of high-quality applicants.”
Professional learning is central to the school’s value proposition. Staff have access to bespoke leadership programs, international fellowships, fully funded postgraduate study, external coaching and tailored career pathways. A six-month internal leadership development program – now in its fourth year – exemplifies Westbourne’s long-term investment in cultivating high-potential talent. The school doesn’t just support ambition; it celebrates it.
Dr Camm explains, “We are redefining what it means to be a school by creating an environment where collaboration and innovation thrive.” This is illustrated by initiatives like the 2030 Strategic Mapand the Beyond 2025 Digital Strategy, which integrate AI-driven tools and immersive technologies, ensuring students and staff are prepared for a future defined by rapid innovation.
The focus on wellbeing is equally comprehensive. Staff benefit from access to free yoga, Pilates and meditation classes; an onsite gym and personal trainer; and allied health services including physiotherapy, myotherapy and chiropractic care. These aren’t fringe perks – they’re built into the fabric of a workplace designed to support both physical and emotional health.
Westbourne’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion isn’t just progressive; it’s transformative. They boast a -20% gender pay gap (meaning women are paid more, on average) versus the national median of +19%, and seven of the 11 executive roles are held by women. Cultural and religious diversity is deeply woven into the school’s community and curriculum, with programs like Echoes and Dialogues creating space for philosophical exploration of values and identity.
Looking forward, Westbourne aims to continue evolving its model. Goals include reducing workloads further, increasing workplace flexibility, and scaling up global engagement through partnerships, exchanges and staff recognition on the international stage.
With forward-thinking strategies, robust support structures and a bold vision for education, Westbourne Grammar School is setting a benchmark in how schools can become high-performing, human-centred workplaces – and proving that excellence in education begins with excellence in employment.
