Studies have shown that virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies can be used to improve the design of learning spaces, allowing students to learn without distraction.
Lumination, a leader in immersive technology, is leveraging VR and AR within a design thinking framework to help students develop and harness the essential skills they need to thrive in the future workforce.
“Lumination is an immersive technology company, creating software to revolutionise the way we teach, learn and work,” says Rebecca Bendikov, Lumination’s head of education programs.
“We offer comprehensive immersive learning technology with the goal of disrupting one of the oldest practices in history — the conventional classroom. Our aim is to help schools, teachers and students improve learning outcomes.”
Bendikov says that through the use of immersive technology, students learn faster, retain more knowledge and build confidence for future careers.
“At the same time, we equip facilitators and teachers with the end-to-end support, resources and software they need to succeed.”

Revolutionising the way teachers teach and students learn
Lumination has created Learning Labs – automated, multi-purpose and immersive environments that are improving students’ learning outcomes.
Bendikov says these Labs offer “effective collaborative learning experiences in the real and digital world.”
“Developed in line with the design thinking framework, students achieve the best learning outcomes directly linked to the curriculum,” she adds. “When learning through immersive technology, students need less time to understand concepts, are less distracted and have more confidence and a stronger emotional connection to the content being taught.”
Instead of reading about the tombs of Egypt, the importance of the International Space Station or sustainability for the ocean depths, VR and AR can transport the student to those places.
“We are enabling future generations to virtually step outside the classroom, solve real-world issues, think critically and develop the skills they need to lead us into tomorrow.”
Furthermore, Lumination has developed LeadMe classroom management software, which offers teachers “a seamless experience with the technology, giving them control with the touch of a button,” says Bendikov.
Breaking down equity barriers
One persistent concern that has lingered, especially since the Covid-19 lockdowns, is how accessible and affordable some of the education market’s most groundbreaking technologies will be for schools — especially those with low budgets. However, this isn’t a problem when it comes to what Lumination offers.
“We provide immersive learning environments delivering world-class educational outcomes, accessible to all. Lumination Learning Labs are end-to-end projects — from initial consultation to implementation,” says Bendikov.
“The scale of the project matches the accessibility and affordability needs of each school, removing any equity barriers.”
Pointing out that improving student outcomes always remains the priority of any project, Bendikov emphasises that Lumination’s education team — many of whom have just stepped out of the classroom — also provide 12 months of support upon completion.
“State schools took the first mover advantage in using this immersive technology, increasing access to new technologies for regional, metro and city-based locations.”
The goal: A Learning Lab for every school in Australia
Bendikov says Lumination is set for strong growth and hopes that every school across the country will have access to the cutting-edge technology that is helping students thrive.
“So far, over two million students in Australia are using our technology. We are currently doubling the number of Labs built in schools, aiming for every school across the country to have one of their own,” she explains.
“This technology is increasingly commonplace in the workplace, so our approach is to enable students to develop and harness the essential skills they will need to thrive in the future workforce.”
