Research has shown that well-designed online learning can improve overall outcomes for students. Indeed, digital technologies have supported student learning through features such as text-to-speech, pop-up definitions, interactive diagrams, digital notetaking, captioned videos, digital games, and online collaboration.
Since 2011, Atomi has been working with schools to supercharge student engagement and retention by using the latest research in pedagogy and neuroscience. Atomi also uses powerful analytics to get clear insights into student usage, who needs assistance and how a teacher’s class is performing.
The company started out with just a few ‘how to’ maths videos and has since grown to deliver millions of lessons to more than 80,000 students. Atomi co-founder Rob Barakat says several key factors have driven this increasing demand.
“The education world is digitising and has been for years. Schools have been going through their customarily slow transition to a digital strategy,” Barakat tells The Educator.
However, with the arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic, which saw thousands of Australian schools pivot to online learning, this created a huge tailwind.
“The pandemic condensed what would have been 10 years of progress into a few months,” he says. “Schools became hugely motivated to adopt new ways of working and put in the effort to upskill staff on new platforms.”
According to Barakat, some of the looming challenges for education service providers in the interactive learning space are increasingly going to become how to navigate the presence of this new technology within the established school system.

“A primary example is a challenge presented by student privacy of data and security of information. As we collect more data on how students engage with the material and how they perform, we have to be increasingly diligent with how that information is used and stored,” he explains.
“Atomi goes to great lengths to ensure data security is a top priority. We are signatories of the Student Privacy Pledge and will continue to make this a focus.”
Barakat says Atomi is also innovating at an increasing pace.
“We’re excited by the tools we can build to improve student learning. Of course, these new technologies must find their way into classrooms with teachers as the custodians,” he says.
“It’s therefore a challenge to build trust in new technologies and onboard, train and upskill teachers on how to really get the most out of these tools.”
To maximise student engagement and retention, Atomi is using the latest research in pedagogy and neuroscience.
Tom O’Donahoo, co-founder and co-CEO at Atomi, says one of the most important features the company has released is personalised revision recommendations, which uses artificial intelligence to understand a student’s individual strengths and weaknesses and predict how they’ll retain content over time.
“This enables students to focus on revising what’s most important to them, drastically reducing the work required to retain content in their long-term memory,” O’Donahoo explains.
“Compared to unguided revision, where students decide what they think they should revise, we’ve seen personalised revision recommendations increase revision efficiency by up to 35%. This means students are spending almost one-third less time to generate the equivalent outcome.”
Looking ahead, O’Donahoo says Atomi will continue investing in the development of key products that optimise both the learning experience of students and the teaching experience of teachers.
“More specifically, we’ll be looking at how technology can supercharge content development, and how we can get more insightful, accurate and predictive analytics to make it clearer for students to see what they should be studying and when,” he says.
“We’ll be giving teachers an incredible level of insight into how their classroom learns and automatically highlight where intervention will be most beneficial and to whom.”
