While the past 18 months have been challenging for many organisations, including ORIGO Education, executive chairperson and founder James Burnett recognised early in the COVID-19 pandemic that there would be a great need to support parents and carers to keep primary school children learning.
Burnett has made a significant impact on the education sector during the past 18 months by spearheading several key initiatives, including “ORIGO at Home,” an online program that provided several months of free daily online lessons and activities.
He led his professional team of writers to create this engaging program, which unlike most free content that focuses solely on practice, included significant instruction so children could learn and understand the mathematics concepts before applying and then practicing them.
In recognition of his work to help students and staff thrive during the pandemic, Burnett was named one of Australia’s Most Influential Educators of 2022 – an accolade he says is a “huge honour”.
“There are so many talented educators across Australia striving to raise the bar and set new teaching and learning standards for students. We have worked hard to support them with meaningful mathematics resources that are engaging, effective and research based,” Burnett told The Educator.
“ORIGO Education is constantly bringing best practice to the Australian classroom. To be acknowledged for that contribution, and for helping to build an inspiring and sustainable teaching and learning culture, is an achievement that makes me incredibly proud,” he says.

Milestones
This year, Burnett is continuing ORIGO Education’s successful professional learning series with a particular focus on addressing the major changes that will influence the teaching of mathematics.
“There are many significant changes proposed in the newly revised Australian curriculum: mathematics including new content and the repositioning of content across year levels,” he says.
“While we believe these changes are in the best interests of Australian students, they do mean teachers will need professional learning that specifically targets the grades they teach.”
ORIGO Education’s professional learning series is comprised of 12 concise webinars covering the essential content and pedagogy for the core strands of the curriculum – number, algebra, space & measurement, and statistics & probability – across every primary grade from Years F-6.
Moving forward in 2022, Burnett says his major focus is on helping teachers turn their best ideas into action.
“Professional learning is critical, but it must be supported by appropriate resources that can assist in the implementation of those new ideas,” he says.
“Therefore, my other main focus for 2022 is the continued writing of the content to address Australia’s new mathematics curriculum. Algorithmic thinking is an entirely new topic in the curriculum, and we have done considerable work in this area over the past three years.”
He says ORIGO Education’s reputation for being pioneering and innovative means the education community will be looking to the company for a practical solution that is based on research.
“It is a challenge that I don’t take lightly so I am focused on rolling out this resource in the coming months.”
The award-winning educator has authored and co-authored more than 300 mathematics resources for teachers and students aged 5 to 12 and is regularly invited to speak to audiences across North America and Australia.
