IN RECENT years, artificial intelligence and machine learning have demonstrated their power to transform teaching and learning, but a persistent question that arises from educators is whether this technology is helping teachers or adding more complexity to their job.
As the experts in their trade, teachers are fortunately quick to separate the wheat from the chaff, and a growing number of schools are now trialling systems that don’t just tick boxes but meaningfully reduce workload and deepen student engagement.
Among the standout examples is Olex.AI, a three-time Bett-award-winning platform that’s been transforming the way schools, teachers and students approach English writing, feedback and assessment.
Launched at Bett UK in early 2024, the platform has been helping students lift their outcomes through instant, personalised feedback on English writing. Through one-click marking, custom rubrics, multilingual support and visual storytelling, Olex.AI turns student work into illustrated storybooks, boosting creativity, confidence and engagement.
However, that’s now changing, says Bowater. “The emergence of large language models [LLMs] means we can finally build tools that truly understand how students use language – whether they’re selecting the right quotation, using adjectives effectively or crafting a compelling opening paragraph,” he says.
“With writing standards a priority for schools across Australia, we’re excited to partner with Campion Education to offer a tool to Australian schools that genuinely supports teachers: saving time, surfacing insight and helping students become more confident, capable writers.”
Beyond freeing up time for teachers, Bowater says the more exciting benefit is how the platform allows teachers to rethink their approach entirely.
“With marking now virtually instantaneous, teachers can integrate feedback directly into the lesson,” he says. “For example, a student might write an essay in the first half of the class, receive personalised Olex feedback within minutes and spend the second half redrafting.”
Bowater says this immediacy boosts engagement – students are far more responsive to feedback on something they wrote just 10 minutes earlier – and accelerates progress through the curriculum.
“We’re also seeing a positive shift in the quality of feedback. Olex’s AI doesn’t know the student’s name, so feedback is entirely objective. That removes unconscious bias and helps teachers identify deeper patterns and nuances in student writing that might otherwise be missed,” he says.
“For early-career teachers, the structured, high-quality feedback acts as embedded professional development – built in collaboration with experienced teachers and examiners.”
One of the platform’s most loved features is the Imaginator
Storybook, says Bowater. “Olex creates a beautifully illustrated booklet featuring the student’s own essay, AI-generated artwork based on their writing and personalised feedback,” he says.
“Teachers can even choose to translate the feedback for families who speak other languages, making learning more inclusive at home as well as in the classroom.”
More control, less complexityWhile AI remains daunting for many educators, Bowater says there’s no need for teachers to understand the AI “under the hood”.
“All they must do is click ‘Run Olex.AI’, and from there, they remain fully in control. Teachers define the marking rubric, which can be customised to match their school’s framework.”
In addition to reviewing all feedback before it reaches students, teachers also receive tailored insights – like a performance overview for the whole class and priority next steps, says Bowater.
“Olex can even generate a customised lesson plan for the next session based on the most common misconceptions identified in student work,” he says.
“We’ve also recently launched OlexAnalytics, which provides – for the first time – quantitative data on English progression. It tracks everything from spelling and grammar to the use of tenses or strength of dialogue.”
School leaders can view month-by-month charts showing class and student-level progress, helping them identify trends, celebrate improvement or spot areas of concern, Bowater says. “In short, Olex supports each teacher’s unique approach while equipping them with deeper insight and flexible tools that enhance their professional judgement – not replace it.”
Looking ahead, Olex.AI has an exciting roadmap, much of it shaped directly by feedback from teachers.
“Our core focus remains long-form writing, where the biggest breakthroughs in AI have happened recently,” Bowater says. “And thanks to built-in handwriting recognition, students don’t even need to type their work for Olex to process it.”
Olex.AI is already expanding into related humanities subjects like history, civics and geography, and over time, the platform will support a broader range of age groups, Bowater says.
“On the analytics front, we’re deepening the level of insight Olex provides – tracking individual student progress over time, surfacing misconceptions that might otherwise go unnoticed, and offering increasingly personalised feedback,” he says.
“What excites me most is that almost every school we work with brings us new ideas. Teachers are the experts, and we see our role as building tools that amplify their impact. That’s the heart of our development philosophy: keep it teacher-centric, always.”
Turning feedback into fuel for growthLucien Bowater, Olex.AI’s CEO, says the platform was founded on a simple idea: technology should help teachers teach better.
“By harnessing AI, we can reduce workload, provide deeper insight into student progress and ultimately free up teachers to focus more on what matters most – engaging with students in the classroom and maintaining a healthy work-life balance,” Bowater tells The Educator.
“This is especially important in English teaching, where marking extended writing can consume teachers’ evenings and weekends. Historically, English has been underserved by edtech, simply because it’s difficult for traditional software to grasp the nuances of language.”
