Smart tech, real results, no hype

As AI transforms classrooms, one company is helping schools strike the balance – with smarter tech, simpler teaching and a human-first approach that lets teachers lead while the systems run silently beneath

IN AUSTRALIAN school staffrooms, a quiet shift is underway. Teachers are testing, trialling and – in many cases – tentatively embracing the next wave of edtech solutions.
At the centre of this movement in 2025 is AI. Now more than just a buzzword, it’s a fast-evolving tool with serious potential to ease workloads, personalise learning and lift outcomes.
Still, with every exciting breakthrough there are just as many questions. How do educators ensure AI is safe, and meaningful to young people’s education? And who is delivering measurable results?
The Educator recently sat down with Martin Moelle, managing director at BenQ Australia, to find out how the company is helping schools tame the chaos and make powerful AI feel practical, intuitive and meaningful.
BenQ is a leading provider of education display solutions, offering smart boards, projectors and monitors designed to support healthy, flexible learning. Its EDLA-certified BenQ Boards integrate with Google Mobile Services and feature ClassroomCare® technology, including Eyesafe® Certified 2.0 screens, IAQ sensors and antimicrobial surfaces. With tools like EZWrite 6 for digital whiteboarding and InstaShare 2 for multiscreen collaboration, teachers can deliver engaging, multimedia-rich lessons. The built-in AMS and DMS platforms simplify device and account management, allowing staff to log in quickly using NFC or SSO and access cloud-based resources to start lessons seamlessly.

“Being able to face students, get their attention and deliver the curriculum in the best way is the desired outcome. Ideally, AI is running in the background making superstars out of ordinary teachers”

“Usually, diverse classrooms in Australia have students from a wide multitude of backgrounds. Having so many languages at their fingertips means that they can act with confidence”
Martin Moelle,
BenQ Australia
“AI is a huge trend and a theme that many educators, schools and government bodies are trying to get their heads around,” Moelle tells The Educator. “A big challenge right now is that there’s a lot of untamed and unauthorised activity happening out there, which is creating a lot of angst amongst both management of education and the teachers themselves.”
Recognising this, BenQ has been equipping educators with a new suite of products that enable not only students but teachers and leaders to harness the power of AI to lift education outcomes.
“A lot of this will be unseen by students, but a lot is happening in the background to enable it wonderfully, and we’ve certainly got a lot of products that are helping educators in that way,” he says.
One of these products is EZ Math – a new software-based feature integrated into BenQ’s interactive flat panels.
“EZ Math is designed to harness AI technology and the powerful chipsets embedded in our hardware to enhance classroom learning,” Moelle says. “This app helps teachers present complex mathematical formulas more clearly.”
Many of these formulas are heavily letter-based – such as x = √y or x³ – and when written on traditional whiteboards, it can be difficult for students to distinguish symbols like superscript twos and threes, Moelle explains.
“Thanks to our 4K resolution displays and AI-enhanced recognition, EZ Math ensures these notations are crisp, legible and easy to follow,” he says.
“What sets EZ Math apart is its ease of use. Teachers can quickly erase, change or modify equations using simple gestures like touch, pinch or swipe – no need to stop, grab a physical eraser and break the flow of the lesson.”
Moelle says the focus is on creating helpful shortcuts that make classroom instruction smoother and more efficient.
“A key focus for us has been helping teachers maintain as much eye contact with their students as possible,” he says. “Every time a teacher turns away to adjust something on the board, there’s a risk of losing connection and engagement. EZ Math helps solve this by keeping interactions seamless and intuitive – powered by the leading-edge AI-enabled smart chipsets inside the board.”
Fortunately for teachers, the app will be easily available for download via the BenQ Store, which is integrated into the company’s panels. Users will receive update notifications, and with the appropriate permissions – either granted directly or by an IT manager – EZ Math can be added just like a mobile app.
“Once installed, it’s as simple as tapping the icon and getting started.”
BenQ is not only taking aim at improving students’ maths outcomes; its AI-powered Handwriting Recognition and Speech-to-Text translation tools are helping to enhance literacy outcomes for EAL/D students in diverse classrooms.
“The biggest benefits of these tools are speed and convenience,” Moelle says. “It means that educators can spend less time preparing and focus on lesson execution.”
Even messy writing is usually easily recognised and changed to text, Moelle points out.
“Facilitating translation and even native-level speech means that teachers can help foster communication skills,” he says. “Usually, diverse classrooms in Australia have students from a wide multitude of backgrounds. Having so many languages at their fingertips means that they can act with confidence.”
The AI component in BenQ Boards means they are empowered with a high level of accuracy, Moelle says. “Next, regular updates from BenQ mean that their scope will only broaden as well.”
Tech that talks: giving voice to every learner
One significant update has been over-the-air (OTA) Android upgrades to all Google-certified EDLA (Enterprise Devices Licensing Agreement) BenQ Boards, aimed at enhancing the user experience.
Importantly, the updates enable BenQ Board owners to receive ongoing Google Android and EDLA security patches for long-term protection and improved performance.
“There will be performance boosts in every Google Android update as usual,” Moelle says. “The updates from Google usually cover security, added features and cosmetic changes as well.”
One notable benefit is that education institutions will be able to upload and use apps as they are optimised for the latest operating systems. “Being handicapped with products that are unable to be upgraded is a significant issue,” he explains. “Many third-party apps are staple items for many teachers who rely on them.”
Mindful that students’ online safety is non-negotiable for schools, parents and communities, BenQ’s AI Guardian software is embedded into the board.
“It was created in-house in BenQ to take away the need for educators to worry whether or not the students are using devices that are properly protected,” Moelle says. “It can be considered as a last line of defence against inappropriate material being shared in learning environments.”
In most cases, BenQ Boards are set up in classrooms to foster collaborative learning, Moelle says. “But if educators need to worry every time someone connects, ultimately the feature will not get used,” he notes. “Just one negative experience would have an impact. Being able to mitigate it independently for end users is a key differentiating experience for our users.”
Moelle says BenQ is “not just preparing for the future but building it for schools”. When asked what the future of AI in education would look like in an ideal world, he says AI must be an additional tool in educators’ arsenals that helps empower them to focus and concentrate on teaching.
“Being able to face students, get their attention and deliver the curriculum in the best way is the desired outcome,” Moelle says. “Ideally, AI is running in the background making superstars out of ordinary teachers.”
As for what’s next, Moelle says BenQ has “an ongoing focus” and “clear roadmap” for where it will enhance and develop AI software features.
“This will go on for years,” he says. “Improving our existing ClassroomCare hardware features will also go on.”
