How GRC Solutions became a beloved online training provider relied on by more than 700 schools and 125,000 teachers and staff

WHEN LOCAL compliance training provider GRC Solutions brought on its first school client back in 2013, founder and CEO Julian Fenwick could see that schools faced compliance challenges that were unique to the sector. The compliance training delivered to schools therefore needed to be fit for purpose.
“A well-designed compliance training program can help educators and staff proactively deal with challenging situations,” he tells The Educator. “This might involve scenario-based learning, video simulations and case studies that allow educators and staff to practise responding to difficult situations in a safe environment.”

“We see ourselves as being in collaboration with schools and their communities, which helps us to ensure that training remains relevant to the actual needs of teachers and staff ”
Julian Fenwick,
GRC Solutions
GRC Solutions committed to developing a suite of customisable online compliance training that was designed to meet the needs of education professionals.
“The content would be adapted to the unique context of the education sector, addressing situations and challenges that school staff commonly encounter,” Fenwick explains.
“Recognising the sensitive nature of these topics, the training materials would be developed with appropriate language, imagery and case studies that are respectful and avoid causing distress.”
According to GRC Solutions’ Client Services team, school clients routinely express gratitude for its user-friendly Salt learning management system.
In addition to providing access to training, the system helps teachers and staff to stay on top of their CPD requirements. Learners can attest that they have read school policies stored on the platform. The system also manages external certificates, allowing learners to upload their qualifications.
Crucially, for busy teachers and staff on the go, the Salt system is available through a slick mobile app.
The courses are well known for succinct yet robust writing, innovative short videos and engaging graphics – all of which aim to give teachers and staff a practical understanding of how to prevent and address potential incidents.
“We see ourselves as being in collaboration with schools and their communities, which helps us to ensure that training remains relevant to the actual needs of teachers and staff,” Fenwick says.
Equipping staff for today’s challenges
GRC Solutions’ schools training suite undergoes regular legal updates, so education professionals can know that the content is current. Refreshed graphic designs keep the courses’ visuals from becoming stale for learners who undertake the training from year to year.
With schools now legally responsible for managing emerging risks like cyber threats and data privacy concerns, Fenwick says compliance training can help leaders keep up with the fast-evolving digital landscape, especially as AI becomes more embedded in classrooms.
“Training content must be dynamic and updated regularly to reflect the latest cyber threats, data privacy regulations and the evolving risks associated with AI in education,” he says.
“For instance, as new phishing techniques emerge or data breach methods evolve, training modules should be updated promptly with relevant examples and countermeasures. This includes data privacy concerns related to AI-driven data collection, algorithmic bias in AI tools, and the ethical use of AI by both students and educators.”
As compliance obligations keep increasing, GRC Solutions constantly revises its training content. Its in-house team of compliance training experts, adult education specialists and instructional designers continuously review courses so that content remains resolutely practical and fresh.
In recent years, regulations such as Respect@Work and the psychosocial-hazard reforms have led the team to rethink how they explain concepts such as bullying and harassment in ways that resonate in modern educational environments.
Moreover, Fenwick observes an increased need for school communities to undertake people and communication skills training from a compliance liability perspective. He points out that compliance training is particularly well-placed to help schools foster cultures of respect by covering de-escalation techniques, active listening skills, conflict resolution strategies and how to have sensitive conversations.
The underlying ethos of GRC Solutions’ compliance training is to empower teachers and staff with strategies and steps that they can immediately apply in their working lives.
“When staff feel knowledgeable and equipped with the necessary skills, their confidence in handling difficult situations increases,” Fenwick says.
“This proactive preparedness can lead to quicker and more effective interventions, potentially preventing escalation and minimising harm.”

Schools have also singled out for praise other innovative technological features. For example, there is the adaptive pre-testing capability that enables learners to answer a series of questions up front and bypass lesson content in which they demonstrate proficiency. Adaptive pre-testing has been known to reduce training times by up to 50%, allowing time-poor teachers and staff to focus on other areas of professional growth and development.
Another element of GRC Solutions’ training is its focus on breaking down complex information into smaller modules.
“Where appropriate, we leverage microlearning modules to deliver information in easily digestible chunks,” Fenwick explains, adding that “our short, succinct modular approach breaks down complex topics into manageable segments, respecting teachers' limited time and facilitating quicker comprehension and application”.
